During the summer of 2023 I studied abroad in Seoul, South Korea. Up until the point of going I was SO nervous. Only one other student from my university was going and I had never met them before. At one point I was very close to dropping out, however, I decided not to, and thought I’d give it a go. I am so glad I did. I’ve come back with friends from all over the globe, I’ve grown in confidence, a love for so many new foods and I can speak a little bit of Korean! I’ve put together ten reasons why I believe studying abroad is something you should seriously consider. Remember, there are different ways to study abroad. You can study from one month to a year, it’s up to you.
- See the world
My number one reason must be seeing the world. Studying abroad gives you the opportunity to visit a country and explore everything it has to offer. You’ll be experiencing a new culture and gaining a global perspective.
- Friends from all over the globe
During your study abroad you will meet people from all over the world. You’ll meet so many new people from all walks of life with different backgrounds. Once your study abroad is over you will have friends from so many countries, which is a perfect way to have a tour guide if you end up visiting their home country!
- Improve your CV
Showing potential employers you’ve studied abroad shows independence, adaptability and resilience. It will help you stand out in the job market and make your cv much more interesting!
- Live like a local
You’ll be living in the country for a long period of time compared to a holiday, therefore will be able to immerse yourself into the culture and traditions of the country. You’ll learn to use the public transport, eat at local restaurants and use local leisure facilities.
- Learn a new language
Immersing yourself in a native-speaking environment allows you to practice the language daily. You can speak with locals, helping you improve naturally.
- Confidence
Studying abroad involves completely stepping out of your comfort zone. You’ll be faced with challenges in a new environment, be meeting so many new people and studying at the same time. But you’ll be so proud of yourself every time you overcome a barrier, improving your resilience, and boosting your confidence.
- New foods
Food! One of my favourite parts of travelling. You’ll get to try local cuisines and traditional dishes that originate from the country you’re studying in. You’ll find new foods that you’ll love and continue eating even when back in your home country.
- Travel to neighbouring countries
Living in one country for a long period gives you the chance to visit surrounding countries for short trips away. Depending on where you go, visits to other countries could be no more than a train journey away. You’ll be able to explore a whole new corner of the world!
- New interests
Living in another country provides you with new experiences that may not be available in your home country, and who knows, you may have a hidden talent!
- The experience
Finally, the experience. Studying abroad is something you’ll never forget. You’ll carry the new memories and lessons you’ve gained throughout your life, as well as leaving with new skills and qualities. It may seem so daunting and nerve-wracking beforehand, but it is so worth it when you’re out there experiencing this incredible opportunity. It’s a story you’ll be telling for decades!
